The Magic of the Roar
There’s something about the Roar that keeps hunters coming back year after year. The anticipation of hearing that first distant call echo through the hills, the thrill of getting close enough to see the sheer power of a mature stag, and the challenge of making the right moves at the right time, it’s an experience like no other. Whether you’re after your first red stag or looking to outdo last season’s hunt, the Roar is always an adventure filled with lessons, excitement, and a few hard-earned stories to tell.
What are your most memorable moments from previous NZ Roar hunts?
Last year’s Roar was one to remember, a day trip on public land with my brother that turned into an unforgettable hunt. We spent hours waiting for the perfect moment, watching and waiting as a solid old stag lay low. Patience was key, and when he finally stood, I took my shot. The hard part wasn’t over though, getting him out was no small feat, but the challenge just made the experience all the more rewarding. It was one of those hunts that really sticks with you.
What key lessons have you learned from your years of hunting during the Roar?
- Coming home empty-handed isn’t failure. Hunting isn’t just about the trophy, it’s about the journey, the lessons, and the experience.
- Know your limits. No stag is worth risking safety. Getting home in one piece is always the priority.
- The right gear makes all the difference. Good kit can mean the difference between a comfortable, successful hunt and a miserable one.
What species or locations are your favourite to hunt during the Roar, and why?
Living in Selwyn, I’m lucky to have some of the best hunting country right on my doorstep. Canterbury red stags are my go-to, good genetics, stunning landscapes, and the excitement of a proper mountain hunt make it unbeatable.
What are your favourite pieces of Stoney Creek gear for the Roar, and why?
- Switch Pullover – A staple for those early morning climbs when you’re working hard but need breathability.
- Accelerant Jacket – Lightweight, warm, and compact, making it perfect for packing.
- Nitz Jacket – Unmatched breathability, and the four-way stretch makes it so comfortable you forget you’re wearing it.
- Micro Plus Hoodie – My go-to for layering. Warm without the bulk and perfect under a shell.
- Active Tights – Game-changer. Super stretchy, fleece-lined for warmth, and bonus pockets!
What’s your personal checklist for preparing for the Roar?
- Fitness first – Being in shape makes the hunt far more enjoyable and helps prevent injuries.
- Gear check – Nothing worse than realising something’s broken or missing once you’re out there.
- First aid kit top-up – You never know when you might need it.
What are your top three tips for a successful Roar hunt?
- Stay positive. A good attitude can turn a tough hunt into a great one.
- Patience pays off. The best stags often take their time, and waiting can be the difference between success and regret.
- Confidence is key. If you’re not 100% sure about your shot, don’t take it.
How do you adapt your tactics depending on terrain or weather conditions during the Roar?
Preparation is everything. Always have a Plan B, whether that means an alternative hunting spot for bad weather or a different route out if things get tricky. A little extra planning before you head off can save a lot of stress later.
What advice do you have for beginners joining their first Roar?
- Know your limits. If you’re tired or struggling, speak up, hunting is a team effort.
- Enjoy the moment. The Roar is special, and it’s not just about the stags, it’s about the adventure.
Are there any myths or misconceptions about the Roar you'd like to debunk?
That it’s highly addictive! Once you’ve experienced the intensity of a roaring stag up close, there’s no turning back.
What are your goals for this year’s Roar?
People often think the loudest stag is the biggest and best. Truth is, the biggest stags are often the quiet ones, sitting back and letting the younger boys do the hard work. Patience and strategy win over charging into the noise.
What do you enjoy most about hunting during the Roar?
I’m hoping to focus on a fallow buck this season, got some exciting plans in the works, so fingers crossed!
What Makes Roar Hunting So Special?
The sheer intensity of it all. The stags are in full voice, responding to calls, and the whole atmosphere changes. It’s the only time of year where you get that kind of interaction with them, and it’s unreal.
How do you ensure safety during the Roar?
- Carry a PLB. No excuses - this is non-negotiable.
- Check the weather. It can change fast, and being prepared is key.
- Tell someone your plans. Always let someone know where you’re going and when you’ll be back.
- Wear hi-vis. Especially in high-traffic areas - safety always comes first.
The Roar is one of the best times of year to be out in the hills, and every season brings new lessons and experiences. If you’re heading out, enjoy every moment, stay safe, and may your patience be rewarded with a cracker stag!
See you out there!
Cheers, Nicole
