Are you roar ready? To be prepared is a combination of having the right gear and right level of fitness for your intended application. So with this in mind we thought we’d ask some of our Test Team for their tips along with their favourite Stoney Creek gear.

When it comes to training for the Roar I am much the same as a lot of Kiwis. Working a hard physical job with a young family at home, I don’t have a huge amount of time for training however, the little things count.

Eating nice balanced healthy meals and easing off the beers certainly helps the cause. My main thing before the Roar is to shoot my bow, practice over and over. Practice really does make perfect, in the month leading up to the Roar I try and shoot at least 15-20 shots every night. In my eyes the best training you can do is time on the hill, even if it’s walking up a small hill in town with a pack on. It all helps the cause.
My favourite bits of kit to wear during the Roar, are the Rock Pullover, Fast Hunt Shirt and Microtough Trousers. The perfect set up for all occasions.

Every hunt is different, just as each game species requires different hunting tactics, each hunt will push different parts of the body. Cardio endurance, leg and core strength is the forefront of most of my workouts. I like to vary my training over the week with boxfit and hill running for my cardio endurance and pack training and gym weight work for my leg and core strength.
Being ‘fit’ will not only make your hunt physically easier it will also greatly reduce your chances of injury, and you will be able to make better calls in the hills. Being tired and worn out really impacts your mental judgement. Don’t let the daunting task of working out or climbing a mountain be the reason your adventure fails, and at the end of the day any training is better than none!
During the Roar my favourite Stoney Creek garment would have to be my Fast Hunt Shirt. It keeps me ultra-stealth in the bush and protects me from the sun. It keeps me cooler, drier and lighter when I’m burning up the hills and has the added side vents for when I need a quick cool down.

When it comes to getting Roar Fit I try to get out for a number of hunts over February and March and get hill fit that way. I’m not much of a gym person and think that the best way to get fit for the hills is to hit the hills with weight on you back. If I go for a walk with my partner I will take a day bag and pop 10kg in it and prefer to walk up hills rather than on the flat.
During the Roar I’ve got a number of favourite Stoney Creek pieces and will often tailor my kit depending on trip location and duration. The first couple of items that generally get packed are my Fingerless Gloves, STC Patch Cap and Micro+ Hoodie all in Tuatara® Camo Forest. Everything else gets picked depending on location, duration and weather conditions.

I don’t train for the Roar in the traditional sense of going to the gym or working out. My job is physically demanding and requires me to walk up hills all day with a day pack full of work gear and sometimes a pack full of work and camping gear so that keeps me fit and toned. The best way to get fit and ready for the Roar, or any kind of hunting, is to go hunting. If you can’t do that often then do things that mimic the kind of hunting you are likely to be doing. If you’re going to be climbing big hills then do weight training with a pack on and walk some steep tracks!
My favourite gear to use during the Roar is definitely the Frostline Jacket and Landsborough Trousers! Both items perform really well in hot and cold weather which is a big factor for me when I’m packing for a multi day traverse and can only take limited clothing. I know that no matter what the weather is doing I can rely on those two items to allow me to hunt hard and the Tuatara® Camo allows me to get close to animals undetected.
